Hope House Foundation Receives 2012 Community Builder Award

Recognized for Promoting Inclusion of People with Disabilities
WASHINGTON, DC — The ANCOR Foundation is pleased to announce the Hope House Foundation’s Community Support Program as the 2012 Community Builder Award recipient. The program offers person-directed, individualized supports that allow people with disabilities to live fully integrated in their communities.

Hope House provides housing and support to approximately 120 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their own homes. Founded in 1964 by a group of parents seeking an alternative to placing their children in institutions, Hope House is one of the pioneers of community living for people with disabilities—an attitude that has continued throughout the life of the organization.

In the 1980s, the organization began transitioning the people it serves from group homes into their own homes. (It is the only organization in Virginia that supports adults with disabilities exclusively in their homes.) Today, Hope House’s Community Support Program provides individualized support and financial assistance to help people with disabilities create meaningful connections and relationships in their communities.

“Hope House embodies the conviction that people with disabilities want and deserve the same things in life that everyone else does. They want to express their unique abilities and talents, they want strong supportive relationships with friends and family and they want to be an integral part of their communities,” says Bill Tapp, ANCOR Foundation President. “We’re very pleased to honor them with this award and hope it will be an inspiration for others to do the same.”
